FAQ

1.) CONCERNS ABOUT CODES

You can go to www.stairways.org and download the 2006 Visual Interpretation of the International Residential Codes.  ALWAYS check with your local building Permits and Inspection Office.

2.)  CAN I MIX POST-TO-POST SYSTEM WITH OVER-THE-POST SYSTEM?

Yes. You can start with a nice starting step (# 8010 for example) with a volute or turn-out on top of newel.  As you start up the rake and get to a turn or balcony rail, you can transfer to the post-to-post system.

3.)   CAN I PAINT MY IRON BALUSTERS AND NEWEL POST?

Yes.  You can add an accent or entirely change the color of your stair parts on-site.  (NOTE:  Repainting voids the factory warranty, so be very cautious.)  I would advise having a professional painter/paint shop take on this project.

4.)  SHOULD I PAINT OR STAIN MY RISERS?  WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF EACH METHOD?

This is a personal preference.  One word of advice is to remember that a stained riser does not show toe and shoe marks as much as a painted riser.

5.)  ON MY EXISTING STAIRCASE, I HAVE WOODEN BALUSTERS.  CAN I CONVERT TO IRON BALUSTERS?

Yes, in most circumstances you can.  For helpful hints, please email current staircase pictures to the Old Staircase Man, and I will be happy to assist you.

6.)  IS THE OLD STAIRCASE MAN AVAILABLE FOR QUESTIONS AFTER MY PARTS ARRIVE AND DURING THE INSTALLATION PROCESS?

Yes.  I will be happy to discuss any questions you or your staircase builder may have.  Please send me an email.

7.)  HOW DO I ATTACH RAIL TO FITTINGS AND THEN TO NEWEL?

Easy - to - Follow Instructions are packed with each fitting.  Also, we have a 60 page Step-By-Step Stairway Construction Book available FREE of charge. Go to our Home Page ...Samples/Literature.  Follow Instructions.

8.)  CAN I SHIP STAIRCASE PARTS TO ANY ADDRESS?

We can ship to any physical address, but someone must be there to receive, unload, and sign shipping receipt.  No Post Office Boxes, please.

9.)  HOW DO I DETERMINE MY SHIPPING COST?

Your shipping cost is determined according to your shipping addresss and weight of order.  Your final shipping cost will be calculated after your order is processed and before billing for your approval.  On Common Carrier orders, a good rule of thumb is approximately 7% of your order.

10.)  WHAT FINISH/STAIN DO WOOD PARTS COME IN?

All of our wood parts come unfinished (raw wood).  Paint Grade come primed and sanded (white only).
